Background of the Study
Early childhood neglect represents a pervasive issue that significantly impacts a child’s emotional development. In Ondo State, the phenomenon of neglect—characterized by a lack of adequate emotional, physical, and social support during formative years—has raised alarms among educators and mental health professionals. Neglect during early childhood can hinder the formation of secure attachment, which is critical for healthy emotional regulation and social interaction (Olusegun, 2023). In environments where caregivers are unable or unwilling to provide sufficient attention, children may develop maladaptive emotional responses that persist into adolescence and adulthood.

The societal dynamics in Ondo State, marked by both rural traditions and emerging urban influences, present a unique context where traditional child-rearing practices are sometimes challenged by modern socio-economic pressures. Families experiencing economic hardships or cultural shifts may inadvertently neglect the emotional needs of children in favor of meeting basic survival demands. Research from recent years indicates that early neglect is associated with heightened vulnerability to mood disorders, difficulties in forming relationships, and impaired stress management (Adebowale, 2024). Moreover, the absence of early emotional support often translates into long-term deficits in emotional intelligence, ultimately affecting academic performance and social integration.

In addition, environmental factors such as community disintegration, limited access to quality childcare, and the erosion of extended family support systems further compound the risks associated with neglect. The interplay between socio-economic adversity and familial neglect creates a complex matrix that predisposes children to emotional dysregulation. Recent studies underscore that children who experience neglect are at an increased risk for developing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders, making early intervention critical (Ajayi, 2025).

Given these concerns, it is imperative to critically examine how early childhood neglect affects emotional development in Ondo State. This study aims to explore the pathways through which neglect influences emotional outcomes, assess the severity of its impact, and identify potential protective factors that may ameliorate negative effects. By drawing on recent empirical evidence and contextual insights, the research will offer recommendations for policy and practice that can foster resilience among neglected children and promote healthier emotional development.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized adverse effects of early childhood neglect on emotional development, there remains a significant gap in research specifically addressing this issue in Ondo State. Many studies have focused on physical and educational outcomes, leaving the emotional repercussions underexplored. This gap is particularly concerning given that emotional competence is a cornerstone of overall development and future well-being. In Ondo State, the prevalence of neglect—often driven by socio-economic pressures and evolving family structures—has not been thoroughly documented, and its direct effects on children’s emotional regulation and social interactions are yet to be fully understood (Babatunde, 2023).

The absence of comprehensive studies hinders the development of targeted interventions that could mitigate the long-term consequences of neglect. Moreover, the cultural context in Ondo State, where traditional child-rearing practices are in transition, suggests that the manifestations of emotional neglect may differ from those observed in other regions. There is an urgent need to understand how these unique contextual factors contribute to emotional deficits among children. Additionally, the interplay between neglect and other risk factors, such as poverty and limited access to mental health services, further complicates the picture and necessitates an integrated research approach (Ibrahim, 2024).

This study aims to fill these critical gaps by investigating the specific ways in which early childhood neglect influences emotional development in children in Ondo State. By examining the multifaceted dimensions of neglect and its long-term implications, the research will generate insights into potential remedial strategies and early intervention programs. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to a body of knowledge that informs policy formulation and practical measures to improve emotional outcomes for neglected children in the region (Olatunde, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of early childhood neglect on the emotional development of children in Ondo State.
  2. To identify the socio-economic and cultural factors that contribute to neglect in early childhood.
  3. To propose intervention strategies that support emotional resilience in neglected children.

Research Questions

  1. In what ways does early childhood neglect affect emotional development in children in Ondo State?
  2. What socio-economic and cultural factors are most strongly associated with early childhood neglect in this region?
  3. Which intervention strategies can effectively promote emotional resilience among neglected children?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Children who experience early childhood neglect in Ondo State exhibit lower levels of emotional regulation compared to those who receive adequate care.
  2. Socio-economic disadvantages significantly predict the occurrence of early childhood neglect and its impact on emotional development.
  3. Intervention programs that incorporate culturally sensitive approaches improve emotional resilience in neglected children.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target children aged 5–12 years in selected communities within Ondo State. Both quantitative measures and qualitative interviews will be used to gather data on emotional development and neglect. Limitations include potential underreporting of neglect due to cultural sensitivities and the challenges of isolating neglect from other co-occurring adverse experiences.
